Born in Louisiana, raised in Mississippi where he met and studied with Mississippi John Hurt in the early 60's, Svare began touring in the early 70's with Professor Longhair, Bukka White, Gatemouth Brown and Roosevelt Skykes. The only solo musician to be booked for 25 solid years at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Svare has toured and/or played with Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Hot Tuna, Ry Cooder, Doc Watson, Kris Kristoferson, Robbie Robertson, the McGarrigle Sisters, JJ Cale and the Allman Brothers. Lucinda Williams was a student of Svare's. He brought her on stage for her first time. In '88 Svare began playing with Daniel Lanois as a session man where he played with Sarah McLaughlan and others at Kingsway studio in New Orleans. While living in Quebec from 1990 to 1995, Svare was with folk artists Kate and Anna McGarrigle. He then stopped touring and came home to Louisiana to write and practice dharma on the river he calls home. To hear samples or order either of these albums, click on its image.
